The clocktower above the Brookfield courtyard is an iconic feature of the Royal Latin School site. The clock itself is original or possibly pre-dates the building (c. 1875). ‘The Old Fox’ weathervane on the top of the clock was made in 1963, probably by the school’s metalwork teacher at the time, Les Smith. The clock was made by clockmaking partners James de la Salle and William Christie, who traded out of Cannon Street, London in the early to mid 1800s. Christie was also chronometer maker to the Admiralty.

The clock is still in working order, and underwent a clean up recently to see if the original chime could be reinstated (after an absence of many years), which fortunately it could! You can listen to a short clip of the chimes here.
