I've not thought about this for many years, but who remembers the Tuesday night sessions—I'm sure it was Tuesday—in Mr “Smutters” Smith's workshops, across the Brookfield quad from the common rooms?

It was open to the community, as I remember, and we'd have the run of the woodworking and metalworking shops. Hans, the groundsman, was a permanent fixture. He never had that much to say, but he could sing. It was only years later that I realised “We'll Keep a Welcome” wasn't actually a German song. Did George Embleton really capture him in the war? That was the story, anyway.

Who else used to come? Mike Law and me, and Henry Walker, for sure. I think Andy Cooper was often there, too. Mad that he became headmaster later. He was so cool, with his AC sports car. He introduced me to Buckingham's own guitar hero, Bernie Marsden, on one occasion (Babe Ruth, Whitesnake, UFO, …).

Highlight was tea and biscuits, dispensed from one of those beaten-up large aluminium teapots.

Mr Grimsdale surely remembers, but twasn't today nor yesterday, it has to be said.
